Our new paper The Sovereignty Test reframes the story. Deeper UK–EU coordination isn’t about Europe. It’s about power. The ability to control our borders. To secure our energy. To shape our defence posture. To protect our democracy.

A bit on politics I think is key in winning in the future but has always been true- a bit of a ‘fix the dirt road about it” As told to told Pippa Crerar by Keir Starmer, and originally from Frank Dobson

Strangers in our own country? New research finds 50% of Brits feel disconnected and 44% sometimes feel like strangers - but it's a mistake to tie that just to immigration, with the cost of living, social media, decline of town centres & the legacy of covid big drivers.

This EU reset underlines the key difference between @keir_starmer and the Faragistas: he can operate pragmatically in the national interest and defence of British values in a way that they can’t. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

🇬🇧🇪🇺 "The Prime Minister's deal with Europe isn't about reopening old debates. It's a chance to start a new one." Anna McShane of The New Britain Project think tank on the UK-EU deal labourlist.org/2025/05/keir-s…

This is the key test. It’s difficult to overstate public exhaustion with and reticence to return to Brexit rows. If deal is seen as reopening that govt will pay price, but if seen as pragmatic friction reducing changes and Tories/Reform re-litigating Brexit govt stands to win.

Those who voted for Brexit might be still sceptical of Europe but they’re not sceptical of security, control and sovereignty. Me for LabourList this morn on how Labour can tell a new story about power in a post Trump/post Ukraine world that punishes isolation.

Reform has a world view of heroic isolationism. But there is no return to a world before war in Europe and a changed United States, because that world no longer exists. The PM's deal today recognises that - it's not about Europe - it's about power.

Brutal. Head of DfE is flapping all over place in MP Committee trying to explain the 6.5k extra teachers promise from Labour. Head of MP committee: "So it sounds like it's underway... but you don't know what it is?"

Luke Akehurst (@lukeakehurst) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This poll is very misleading because it isn't 2024 Reform voters Labour is particularly worried about or targeting - they didn't vote Labour even when we won a landslide - it is the 2025 extra voters Reform are now getting, some of whom switched from Lab, esp in Red Wall seats,

The reality is 70-80% of a school’s budget is on staffing. You can’t really strip this back unless you want to compromise standards & negatively impact on workload & children’s learning.

I do wish Downing St would stop using policy arguments that make it seem impotent & lacking agency. Saying there is 'no alternative' to unpopular decisions just feeds into that idea that govts are powerless & all the same. Own the action. Explain the trade-off. Make the case.

Very proud of this piece in Schools Week Nansi Ellis Giving teachers the opportunity to be intellectually curious and have agency over their development is key! "Teach And" for the win!
