Thank you Amol Rajan for raising the question of funding for the UK’s hospice sector with the Health Secretary today. The data Hospice UK obtained from FOIs established that almost none of the £1.5bn of extra investment into ICBs mentioned by Victoria Atkins has gone to hospices

England's independent hospices faced a cut of £47m in real terms in 2023, as they were offered either no uplift at all in their ICB (local NHS) funding, or at a rate well below the rise in the costs of providing their care. Hospice UK has raised this literally all year 🧵(1/6)

It initially really surprised me in this first year at Hospice UK that hospices do so much beyond their buildings. Less than 5% of deaths occur in hospices, but the number of people who benefit from their services is so much higher: Over 300,000 people in 2022. Not just IPU!

Thanks Ashgate Hospice for joining us on BBC Breakfast to speak up for the hospice sector as it faces a £77m deficit. We need a new funding model for hospices – the cost of not supporting them would be devastating for patients, families, staff, communities and the NHS itself.

Measuring impact. There's an increasing focus on demonstrating impact in our work in improvement, change & knowledge creation. But while we're so busy measuring impact, is anything actually changing? Data & measurement are important but they're not enough to create change,

If we want to create large scale, radical change, we need to shift from a "manager’s mindset" (building consensus & redesigning processes to make them more predictable & efficient) to a "changemaker’s mindset" (building coalitions & creating space for exploration & discovery).

Really interesting paper - should be core reading for all in palliative care or death and dying “dying was experienced as relational rather than a matter of personal choice and autonomy” Challenging policy narratives on choice and a ‘good death’ EDDUK Marie Curie EOLC

How do we enable change? According to Greg Satell Greg Satell, ideas for change spread socially. So it's the structure of networks that determine how fast/far ideas for change travel. It's not about the mode of communication or even the individual influence of early adopters.

"We’ve seen the worst financial results for the sector in 20 years, with hospices facing a collective deficit of £77 million" - Toby Porter, CEO, Hospice UK. Hospiscare are cutting beds and services due to insufficient funding. Urgent action is needed. express.co.uk/news/uk/191996…
