The world has witnessed incredible poverty reduction in recent decades. *Never* in human history a smaller share of the population lived with less than the equivalent of $2.15 a day. In 1820 around 80% lived in extreme poverty. Today less than 10%.

There is a persistent myth of "the happy poor". It's just that: a myth. While happiness and life satisfaction are of course driven by many other things as well, people in poor countries are on average much more unhappy. Economic growth matters. ourworldindata.org/grapher/gdp-vs…

When it comes to migration, one aspect that gets surprisingly little attention is the huge contribution migrants make through remittances to their countries of origin. These gifts, often sent to relatives or friends, are much higher than all of public international aid combined:

The world is full of problems, which people are often very aware of. But most people have no idea about the many improvements we have visualized, and therefore they lose hope for the future and think the world is doomed. gapminder.org/i

When people say we need to reduce the global population to deal with the environmental crisis, ask them if they are aware that the global population growth rate peaked 60 years ago and has been largely in sharp decline ever since.
