@ProfessorCrunk The young people that I've surveyed on this often find "Dear" uncomfortably intimate, like calling your professor your darling. They see Hello as professional (Reports from other prof friends suggest that they're very willing to adapt if you just tell them what you want though!)

Maybe I felt personally attacked because I do use “Hello” in emails. I’ll only use “Dear” if I’m cold emailing. I’ll also throw in a “Hello!” with no name so I don’t misgender and the exclamation point is to show sincerity. I’ll also use a full name so I don’t misgender at times

I feel like recommendation letters and emails are a diff genre of writing but that’s just me But while we’re here I do think it’s silly to put “dear” in a recommendation letter when I’m submitting it to a damn digital portal
