M1A2SEPv3 is the best armored and safest/survivable (thanks to completely isolated main gun ammunition storage in compartments with blow off panels) MBT in Polish Armed Forces. There are plans to equip these vehicles in future with Active Protection Systems.

An M1A1 FEP Abrams with registration number 633188 of the 2nd Tank Bn and an AAVC-7A1 from the 2d AAB undergo training at MCAGCC, Twentynine Palms, CA, in 2009. What makes this Abrams noteworthy is that it retained the older TSI crosswind sensor rather than the later J-TEC model.

The anemometer used on the early M1 was the Model 201 made by TSI, an ionic type. It works by measuring ions carried by the airflow and offers high sensitivity at low wind speeds. But costs and sensitivity to environmental conditions led the Army to seek an alternative solution.

The replacement is designed by J-TEC Associates, a vortex anemometer that measures wind speed and direction using vortex shedding. With no moving parts, it offers higher reliability and is used on most the US Army large caliber gun vehicles, including M1A1/A2, XM8, M1128, and M10

In my opinion, the M1E3 pre-prototype is disappointing overall. The only aspect really worth praising is the transversely mounted powerpack. It falls short of both the earlier OMT unmanned turret proposal or GDLS AbramsX.

It’s now known that the M1E3 prototypes has selected a modified Caterpillar C13D Inline-6 cylinder engine, rated at 1100hp. The engine is paired with SAPA’s ACT1075LP transmission, which incorporates a 250hp electric motor to provide additional emergency drive for auxiliary use.
