Just reworked a 'stack' from a local site which had Willughby’s leafcutter bee which took residence in a fence post I hope they back next year as I was actually looking for owls and had to do this handheld - would have been so much easier with a tripod!

Washington has just become the first U.S. state to develop a statewide strategy to conserve bumble bees. It focuses on 8 vulnerable bumble bee species. Xerces and our volunteer community scientists supported the process. 🐝 xerces.org/blog/washingto…

This needed to happen and I'm so glad it did. A totally remarkable plant from a very unique, special and underappreciated habitat (that also hosts a lot of peyote and other really cool cacti in it!)

Prostrate Milkweed (Asclepias prostrata) is one of North America's rarest plants, growing in the brutally hot border regions of South Texas & Mexico. It has undulating leaf margins, fragrant flowers, & tuberous roots that it can die back to during times of drought.

The Forgetful Bee. Sorry, anthropomorphizing is fun. We are fun. Therefore we are calling this the forgetful bee. It is also a male Florilegus condignus, collected and photographed by Chelcey Nordstrom in the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington D.C.

TONGUE. This is #Euglossa imperialis it, like the rest of its clade of shiny #orchid #bees, has a long tongue, actually ... this species has a particularly long tongue even compared to other orchid bees.
