Watching China with great interest: From Nicholas Kristof “it’s a decisive breach of the ‘Big Silence,’” said Xiao Qiang, the founder and editor of China Digital Times. “It’s now public knowledge that the emperor isn’t wearing clothes.”’

We won’t emerge from this by “saving” the old system. We need to accelerate the transition to a new system centered on community info needs & news products that help people act & solve local issues A participatory public good that's worth investing in. Yes, I made a chart 🤖

So true! Life after NPR is richer and more diverse and rewarding than you imagine! I feel for all those horribly laid off today - it happened to Kate Concannon and I over 10 years ago. Seemed like the end - but it has been so much better. Go forth and create!

Ten years ago today (!), I was laid off for the first time when NPR canceled Talk of the Nation. It’s an anniversary that was on my mind already, but really hits different against the backdrop of this current wave of cuts in public radio.

FROM BIRTH TO DEATH: I spent the past year exploring how the legacy of racism in America has laid the foundation for the health inequities Black people face from their first breath to their final moments. Five stories. Five families and communities. apnews.com/article/from-b…

I wish Biden would reflect on this debate performance and then announce his decision to withdraw from the race, throwing the choice of Democratic nominee to the convention. Someone like Gretchen Whitmer or Sherrod Brown or Secretary Gina Raimondo could still jump in and beat Trump.
