There really is something sulphurous about Matt Goodwin. Incendiary views. Suspect opinion polls. Massive self-obsession. British public life would be so much better without him.

Can we have a serious discussion about the ‘business as usual’ narrative coming from decision-makers and leaders? All this week, I’ve read so much urging us to ‘try to go about our daily lives’ or ‘keep calm and carry on’. 🧵 1/6

Hundreds of people have turned out to protect the Liverpool church where the under-threat asylum advice centre is based Mostly peaceful atmosphere, but groups of masked youths have arrived in the last few minutes. Police helicopter overhead.

Now that anti-far right protests vastly outnumber the thugs we'll presumably see loads of pieces about how this proves the British people support immigration. Or maybe now they'll be a sudden realisation that protests/riots don't prove anything about majority opinion...

Family has spent two hours on hold to Booking.com, following 2 hours yesterday, still trying to get a refund for an appartment booking cancelled 3 days before our holiday (over a month ago). Yesterday refund was approved and pending in our wallet; today it was cancelled. Useless

NEW: Elliott County, Kentucky is the only county to vote for Democrats 144 years straight. Then they flipped to Trump. But they also voted for Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear. We found how people stopped seeing Dems as the working class party, and how that could change.

A friend of mine asked me why a minister like Lord Peter Hendy was getting involved in an individual's employment. Seemed unusually petty to her. He took it as a personal insult that Gareth would call a station unsafe. Surprisingly immature from a minister of state!

The decimation of the UK's nightlife, and pub culture, is shocking. According to Bloomberg: - Three-quarters of nightclubs shut since 2005 - Number of pubs down by a quarter since 2000 - 13,800 nighttime businesses shut in 2020-23 - 35% London's local music venues closed 2007-15

It’s so beneficial to have someone in a government role being open and communicating to the sector - so different compared to what usually happens (which is they get told to keep quiet) Really interesting key themes emerging from the curriculum review 👇

By now, I'm used to terrible customer service from tech companies - but I've never before had such awful service when I'm trying to GIVE them my money before. So congratulations NOW Help Team, it's a first that support has been so bad I've actually not been able to sign up at all.

It's the third anniversary of Depp v. Heard. Not here to relitigate it for my readers, who are smart folks and get that it was a farce. But I'm looking back because, in retrospect, it predicted Trump's win. An analysis. salon.com/2025/06/02/joh…
