I'm horrified by this evening’s disturbing shooting in Midtown Manhattan, including the murder of an officer and multiple other casualties. I spoke to the NYPD and the Governor's office as the attack unfolded; the situation is now contained thanks to our courageous officers. My

Lexington Avenue SummerFest was another success. Met some long time neighbors, some recent transplants, and one visitor who works in Romanian politics. Only in New York!

I reached out to OCM about a number of these locations (including Bliss + Lex). I'm glad OCM is owning up to this mistake, but it remains a difficult situation to rectify. Entrepreneurs should not be punished, but neither should communities that simply want the law followed.

β€œIt’s a horrible, horrible tragedy, and it demands a whole-of-nation response. And that includes the federal government taking action, and that particularly includes New York Congress members of both parties putting New Yorkers’ lives ahead of any particular lobby.”

We are a community in mourning; we lost four New Yorkers to senseless violence. We are also a community determined to do everything in our power to ensure this never happens again.

Crazy. Alex Bores and I wrote and passed a law this year to require safety plans for these same risks and the tech and VC communities have been working overtime to stop Governor Kathy Hochul from signing it. There’s no need to spin the RAISE Act - Altman is making the case for us. 🀯

It has been an emotional week. I gave quotes for an article coming Monday about the RAISE Act that, while both accurate about the opposition's behavior & true to how I feel, used impolite language. Unclear if that still matters in politics, but it matters to me a person.

My fear is that ordinary Americans are not experiencing the firing of an experienced, non-partisan, leader of a statistical agency as the major earthquake for the United States that it is.

If you're not going to cut off the flow of illegal guns from Texas to NY, can Ted Cruz at least reduce the flow of bigoted tweets? Our Governor Kathy Hochul was showing respect at the funeral of a fallen police officer. Good to know that you wouldn't do the same.

Big news in our push for AI safety! Geoff Ralston, formerly of Y Combinator, endorses the RAISE Act sponsored by Alex Bores and I! This law requires companies developing the most powerful AI systems to create safety protocols to mitigate risk of catastrophic harms. No brainer.

Thanks to BlueDot Impact, AI Safety Awareness Project, and NYC AI Safety for a fantastic conversation on responsible AI governance and the RAISE Act. New Yorkers of all stripes β€” including those building AI startups β€” know we need basic rules of the road for AI development.

Great to spread some Friday joy with a special guest, Democrat nominee for City Council Virginia Maloney . I'm excited to work with Virginia; we all do better when the City and State work together.
