The Great White Trillium is blooming near the Shack! 🤍🤍🤍 As Trilliums age, they begin to turn slightly pink due to anthocyanins that act as antioxidants! This helps protect the tissue of the plant and assists in recovering nutrients.🩷 #PhenologyFriday #AldoLeopoldFoundation

Penstemon grandiflorus is in bloom around the center! Its (strange) common name of "large beardtongue" comes from the tiny hairs on its stamen. #PhenologyFriday #Phenology #Wildflowers #NativePlants

It's the summer #solstice! This very special #PhenologyFriday marks the longest day (and shortest night) in the northern hemisphere, with the sun reaching its highest point in the sky. ☀️ DYK? Length of daylight is a key driver of animal and plant phenology.

Got milk(weed)? The Asclepias genus is critical for monarch butterflies: it's the only plant where monarchs lay their eggs, and the only plant that their caterpillars feed on. The leaves are toxic, which makes caterpillars unpalatable to predators. #PhenologyFriday
