Carlton Marshes gets better and better for dragonflies. I notched up an amazing 22 species this morning including Lesser Emperor and Red-veined Darter

Lesser Emperor on round pool opposite old chapel at Lound yesterday and another today on the private A.W.A pool at Gunton. What a year for them! Is there anywhere that doesn’t have one?

Whirlygig beetles are amazing! The top half of the eye has a RI for seeing in air and the lower half for seeing in water. This is normal speed-no collisions but surely a lot of road rage!

Local birders must read this! It’s hilarious! It’s from Birdwatching magazine. The guy that wrote it has clearly never been here. Section 3 on Benacre Pit is especially amusing

Minsmere isn’t just about birds. Along the boardwalk I found Roesel’s, Dark and Great Green Bush Crickets and Long-winged Coneheads

Cantley beet factory was productive with 12 species of waders and 11 spp of wildfowl. Best- 1 Little Stint,2 Greenshank, Greensands and Common Sandpipers, 3 Ruff, Avocets. Black-tailed Godwits. Also 1 Pintail

An unconcerned Long-tailed Field Mouse allowed me to poke my phone at it on Snakes Lane Ashby. Also a flock of c12-15 Yellowhammers which is notable for this area

Just walked from Gorleston to Lowestoft taking in all usual spots. Result? 2 Chiffchaffs! Brief seawatch at Corton produced 2 Brent Geese-my first of the autumn

Is it possible to tell from this photo whether it’s Xylaria polymorpha or X. longipes please? I wish I’d noticed the micro-moth at the time. It looks interesting!

When the management of the new SWT reserve at Worlingham is complete it will be a superb place for dragonflies. Here are the results for this summer. 20 species!

There is a female Serin feeding on weed seeds at the edge of the path on the western edge of Corton Old Sewage works

5 Snow Buntings north of Kessingland on the shingle opposite the yellow house

I’ve just stumbled upon another female Serin at Beach Farm Benacre. It’s in the hedgerow at the top of the track by the farm entrance. Unbelievable!
