I love finding stuff like this at Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.
MONDO: THE ART OF SOUNDTRACKS hardcover book for $6.99.
The only flaw is a razor thin six-inch slash on the back cover. I can live with that.
8 down, 3 to go in the HK Cinema Classics series at the River Oaks Theatre.
I feel like I should get a prize if I make it to all 11 screenings, like free wonton soup (but I’ll settle for a Tony Stella poster).
I should also add that from a layman the restoration work put into these films has been quite pleasing to my eyes and ears. Whatever Blu-ray region you end up buying it’s safe to say it will be a substantial upgrade from the editions we’ve had before.
The annual Korean Film Nights is a month away and as always it’s a mix of the old and new (or new-ish).
From the old we have retrospective screenings of THE ODD FAMILY: ZOMBIE FOR SALE and Bong Joon-Ho’s MOTHER.
The new includes A GIRL WITH CLOSED EYES and AMAZON BULLSEYE.
Great movie, btw. A moving portrait of two friends struggling to overcome class and religious discrimination to make a better life for themselves.
I bet it could’ve gotten a few more butts into seats had they promoted Martin Scorsese’s involvement as an executive producer.
I always liked Jade Leung. Late to the “girls with guns” game and (AFAIK) lacking either the martial arts skills of a Yukari Oshima or the dance background of a Cynthia Khan or Moon Lee, but still threw herself into some wild action sequences, especially in SATIN STEEL.
We're looking ahead to the first titles from our upcoming Golden Princess 4K SteelBook library! ✨
These Hong Kong masterpieces are joining the Imprint Asia collection in February 2026:
• CITY ON FIRE (1987)
• PEKING OPERA BLUES (1986)
• A CHINESE GHOST STORY TRILOGY (1987 -
DEAD OF WINTER: about as close as we’ll get to seeing Emma Thompson as a straight-up action heroine, playing a Minnesota-nice widow who in the course of the film gets into shootouts, narrow escapes, and even perform emergency surgery on herself. A very enjoyable little thriller.

Experienced car problems while on my day-trip to Dallas. That was an expense I could’ve done without but the alternatives would’ve cost me more time and money if not for the intervention of a kind stranger. Car runs great now and I made it home without further issues!
A WRITER’S ODYSSEY 2: the idea of alternate realities colliding that was played with in the first film is in full bloom here and while it eventually piles-up an enough ideas for two sequels I welcome its go-for-broke audacity. The spectacle and swordplay remain fun and plentiful.
Things were going really well before my aforementioned auto issues popped up. After the morning screening of A WRITER’S ODYSSEY 2 I treated myself to a jianbing and then some Faye Wong at HPB.
