日本の文化の特殊さを語る上で欠かせないのがErin Meyerの研究で、日本はTop-downを強く嫌い自分たちが意思決定のプロセスに関わることを好むが、階層的な組織構造を好む。これはUSとも真逆である。一方中国から見ると「自分たち同様の階層的社会なのにトップに権力がない、謎な国」となる。

この考察、河合隼雄のいう「中空構造の日本」と接続できる。日本は階層を嫌っているのではない。むしろ序列や役割分担はかなり強く受け入れる。なのに、トップ個人がむき出しの意思で全体を決める形は嫌う。つまり「上」はあるにはあるが、絶対的な決定主体としての中心は空洞化している。
