I’ll tell you something about birthdays. I don’t celebrate them much but I love thinking about them. And I’m thinking about them I have discovered a life-changing perspective. Just follow closely.

I think about the fact that if I were born in Ethiopia, today, I’d have been many years younger or older than I am now. Because Ethiopia uses a calendar that is 7 years backwards from the rest of the world. Some months are only 5 days. The year is not 365 days.

If I were born in Vietnam, I would be older than I am now, because you become a year older not only on your birth date, but also on the day of Tet. If I were born in some part of China, I’d have been a year older than I am now because you’re already one, the day you are born.

And if I were born in Bhutan or sometime in Japan, I would have no birthday of mine. Because there are rarely individual birthdays in these places. I find it interesting. How society can influence what we know as birthdays and when we celebrate them.

Does that mean they should not be celebrated? No, they should. By God, please have fun. Celebrate what you call your birthday. Even if you don’t know what date you were born, you could simply choose when to celebrate yours. It’s all thanksgiving after all.

But do not be carried away by rigid definitions or expectations tied to ages, by society — beyond what your body allows. I do not think people should feel the need to always behave or act out an age. To always be “28”. Or “30”. Always.

Mr. Possible (@mrpossidez) 's Twitter Profile Photo

When you’re 28, you’re also 15. You’re also 10, and you’re also 5. And that’s why when you wake up on your 28th birthday you expect to feel 28, but you don’t. You open your eyes and everything’s just like yesterday, only that it’s today. And you don’t feel 28 at all.

Mr. Possible (@mrpossidez) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And sometimes, like you’re underneath the year that is supposed to make you 28. I like to think that we unfold like onion bulbs. Some days you might say something stupid, and that’s the part of you that’s still ten. Or something wise, like your 50 year old Dad would do.

Mr. Possible (@mrpossidez) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Some days you might need to sit around a friend because you’re scared, and that’s the part of you that’s five, or fifteen. And even when you’re all grown up, you will need to cry like if you’re three, someday and that’s okay.

Mr. Possible (@mrpossidez) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Because the way you grow old is like the rings inside a tree trunk, each year inside the next one. That’s how being 20, or 30 or 40 years old is. You don’t feel 30, or 40. Not right away. It takes a few days, weeks even, sometimes even months before you say 28 when they ask you.

Mr. Possible (@mrpossidez) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And even when you manage to say it, sometimes you still won’t feel like you’re smart 28, not until you’re almost 29. And that’s life. To fixate on a societally defined mode of behaviour and try to always be that way, is to become the enemy of your own soul.

If you say you support Peter Obi because you want an Igbo Presidency, I'm absolutely fine with that BUT don't insult our intelligence by saying "he's Competent" ... Are you playing? What type of playing is that?
