#TourdeFrance stage cancelled today because of large amounts of small hail on the roads and flooding. The roads look snow covered from above, but its way to warm (15C) for snow, even in the mountains, and especially in a #heatwave

I often wonder if these headlines are written by seven-year-olds... THE REALITY - any snow will be over Scottish mountain tops that barely anyone will see - no one knows exactly where remnants of Hurricane Lorzeno will end up yet - no mention of uncertainty at all

Thank you British Airways for refunding my flights within 5 days of cancellation. In these difficult times it is appreciated. Unfortunately, SAS - Scandinavian Airlines aren't so speedy - 105 days and still waiting...

Freely available weather forecasts just got a lot better!!! ECMWF has consistently made the most accurate forecasts for decades, now they are free to everybody. I'm excited to explore the treasure trove of new charts, you can see the forecasts too: apps.ecmwf.int/webapps/opench…

The surprise moment when Twitter reminds you of plots you made some time ago. The quite realistic looking cloud field and tornado-like vortex (lower left in plot) from very nice Met Office Unified Model simulation of 20 May 2013 Moore tornado. (with @KirstyHanley2 & Humphrey Lean)

Unbelievable, terrifying and very sad scenes from the town of Erftstaft-Blessem, Germany. Flooding and landslide caused part of the town to slip into nearby open quarry! #germanyfloods

Not many scientists study unusual clouds, as their rarity classes them as unimportant for studying precipitation or climate conditions. As a result, often cloud-formation is poorly understood. Here is a small collection of some of the curious cloud formations. Source: @wired

Might be a few isolated weak thunderstorms in parts of England, Wales and Ireland next few hours, but much bigger storms expected in the US:

We expect *storm surges* from hurricanes to become more intense as sea levels rise. Hurricane intensity is linked more directly to warming. x.com/Globelynx/stat…

Forecast for 16 Oct 1987: "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rang the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way; well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't..." 30 years later... forecast for 16 Oct 2017: there actually is (but will weaken before arrival)
