We will be in court tomorrow opposing McGill University's overreach in seeking to ban all protests on all subjects that it does not approve, including what it considers to be a peaceful protest. McGill is pitting itself against constitutional rights of free expression & assembly.

In court today, the SPVM spoke against McGill’s request for an injunction against the Gaza solidarity encampment, arguing police discretion is essential and they aren’t the private security force of the university. You know how hard it is to make the SPVM look reasonable?

Frances Fox Piven making the same point she has made for decades that unfortunately has to be repeated over and over again about why protest movements go after the targets nearest them: "You can only take collective action where the collectivity is." convergencemag.com/articles/franc…

I wonder if McGill University admin have considered whether their relentless, fruitless, losing legal cases--"punching down" on their own students and faculty--will harm them as they try "punch up" in their noble fight against the CAQ. Seems short sighted.

And: Beyond McGill University's obstruction against @AMPL/AMPD, it is fruitlessly challenging in court the newer Education and Arts associations. Thus, McGill University is at war with ALL of its profs in the social sciences and humanities. The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences needs to see this and reconsider.

Fabrice Labeau says that only "executives choose executives" at McGill University. These executives have a pattern of repeated failures in negotiating with everyone: government, students, Indigenous Peoples, and unions. Perhaps someone else should choose executives.
