Just some frosted corn from the nigh of June 11 to keep you on your toes! Most of this should be fine (a few will die), but it is hard to look at. We’ve had no significant rain since planting 5 weeks ago, and the soil is still cool and dry. Some warm rain would help!

Not ideal to have 6’ (at best) corn tasseling, the rest of the field is 3-4’ and two leaves away from tasseling, and K deficiency still running rampant. It must be dry! Not our typical suite of issues in Wisconsin. I’ve been leaning on my western friends for advice & input

Rain over the past week fell where it was needed most, but drought continues. Deficits over the past 3 months are 6 to 10 inches, highest in southwest Wisconsin. #wiwx

Happy April 1! Not an April Fools joke here, giant ragweed is emerging and growing in southern WI. This picture is actually from March 28. We might need to be prepared for some weedier early-season conditions in a few weeks.

First 4 rows of sweet corn are in! Earliest I’ve gotten those in and easily the best conditions for an early planting. #plant24

That rain last night didn’t feel very warm, but we gained 6-8 degrees of soil temperature across much of Wisconsin from it. With air temps in the 70s today, I’d expect some even warmer soil by the end of the weekend. #plant24

I just left southern WI and a cooperator was heading out to spray wheat for FHB on a super early variety. An hour north, Arlington ARS, Adam Roth just finished cutting our wheat alleys and only the earliest variety heads were out. Next week will be go time for Feekes 10.51 in SWI
