Couple of youthful Gonons tonight, starting with the 2018 “Les Oliviers”-Apricot and flan nose, creamy and glycerol laden palate, proper Rhône richness here. More of a mini Hermitage in this vintage but such balance and class as ever. Drink Rhone @vinetrail
Finally found a tangible benefit to Brexit: our quota for Dover Sole is going up from 19.2% to 20% in five years time. Plus a lot more than that for species we don’t actually catch. Dan Saladino The Food Programme What are all these fishermen whinging about? James O'Brien
Agree..... it was great. Listen tomorrow or BBC Sounds or, as they say, wherever you get your #podcasts Dan Saladino The Food Programme MitchTonks Bournes Fishmongers
Just opened this for our loin of pork later. The 1990 of this was a favourite for many years, this still has proper Sangiovese grip with gorgeous, floral, cherry laced fruit. Should be ace in a couple of hours. Mark Priestley
Gonon 2009 with Ribeyes. Granite and loganberries on the nose. Cool raspberry elements roll along with that spine of granite in the palate. Sumptuous but at 13% in 09, so cool and digeste. Grand vin indeed. @vinetrail Drink Rhone
Sunday treats- finishing up a bottle of Boxler’s superb Gewurtztraminer Réserve 2017 The Wine Society then a young but delicious Cornas Renaissance Clape 2016 ( thank you Bianca Ford) Vrai Cornas steel with such cool brooding fruit. Fab with the 6 hour shoulder. Roasties 9/10 too.
Superb 20 year old Clos des Papes with some oxtail tonight. Elegant, fully resolved with herbal and soil elements. Cool fruit lingers with a lace like structure. Just 14% too. Drink Rhone
Last of a case of 2001 Gripa Le Berceau Saint-Joseph. Beautiful colour, haunting nose of cedar, dark fruit and its granitic soil. So cool(12.5%), intensely savoury and velvety. Long and very fine indeed. @vinetrail Drink Rhone
Perfect combo last night- simple Moules from Jenkins and Son Fish and Game with a sensational Loir (correct spelling!) Chenin 2016 from Domaine de Bellivière via @Vinetrail - pear skin and lemon zest with searing acidity from 80yo Bio vines with extraordinarily minimal intervention.
One of my desert island combos. Chicken and morels with a Gonon St Joseph “Les Oliviers”. 2014 tonight- beautiful, mature apricot kernel and classic flan notes, more linear freshness than the 2018 recently drank. Perfect balance- Grand Vin for me. @vinetrail Drink Rhone
