The person most excited by your presentation should be you. Low on energy? Eat a candy bar, drink some coffee, splash water in your face, because no matter how good your content is, it won't sell itself. (How to make a point: bit.ly/joelpoint) #publicspeaking

Communicating with impact is not about perfecting your speech, your spiel, or your slogan. It's about knowing and nailing your point. (How to make a point: bit.ly/joelpoint)

Leader isn't a title to claim. It's a position of respect to earn. Leaders aren't always the first to take charge. They're the first to take responsibility. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking the right questions. #FridayFeeling

Deliver a stellar speech 1. Look the part. 2. Act naturally. 3. Don’t tell what you can show. 4. Choose your emphasis. 5. Move about if you can. 6. Vary your intensity. #presentationskills #publicspeakingclass #virtualtraining #frippvt

#TGIF There are two types of tired: one that requires rest, and one that requires peace. Wishing you both this weekend. Have a good one!

It’s not the mere presence of data that gives a presentation credibility and power. It’s HOW that data is presented. See seven ways to ensure your presented data is doing its job. hbr.org/2020/02/presen…

Is it possible to shorten a presentation without losing all of your impact? Yes. Don’t panic. After all, a sound bite is often more powerful than a lengthy dissertation. #presentationskills #keynotespeaker #powerfulpresentations

Salespeople fail the "sell me this pen" test when they describe the pen but don't convey its ability to empower expression. Are you similarly describing your product/book/mission versus championing its ultimate value? I can help you get to the point. bit.ly/joelpoint

Early in a speech you can preview your key ideas if you want your audience to have an overview of the entire presentation. But if one or more of your key ideas contains an element of surprise, don't “show your hand” in your introduction. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

I just turned down a #publicspeaking opportunity because they want me to pay hundreds in conference registration costs. Whether you're writing or speaking, a professional opportunity should be compensating you, not costing you. Don't accept less than you're worth.

When you focus on making a point versus "giving a speech," the task of #publicspeaking becomes so much easier: Identify the target. Aim toward the target. Hit the target. Nothing else matters as much. (How to make a point: bit.ly/joelpoint)

Integrity is walking the talk. Your actions live up to your words. Authenticity is only talking what you already walk. Your words reflect your actions. It’s good to practice what you preach. It’s better to reserve your preaching for the principles you consistently practice.

There's nothing wrong with taking feedback personally. Taking it personally shows you're taking it seriously. Getting upset isn't a sign of weakness or defensiveness. It's a sign that you care. The key is to make sure your ego doesn't stand in the way of your learning.

When taking a question from an audience member, repeat the question aloud. This accomplishes 2 things– it allows everyone to hear the question clearly; & it offers an opportunity for the questioner to either clarify or confirm the inquiry. #PainlessPublicSpeaking #PublicSpeaking

I asked my daughter to give me a phone book. She laughed at me, called me a boomer and lent me her iPhone. So, now the spider is dead, her iPhone is broken & my daughter is furious…
