On this day in 1960, Congolese independence leader, anti-colonial and Pan-Africanist icon Patrice Lumumba is assassinated after a coup that was backed by the US and Belgium. US President Eisenhower ordered the CIA to ‘eliminate’ Patrice Lumumba. For daring to oppose Belgian
