General Gowon commissioned a Peugeot assembly plant in Kaduna with N8.5 million in 1975. He later opened a Volkswagen plant in Lagos with N11.5 million. The plants had the capacity to produce 20,000 cars annually, creating numerous jobs for Nigerians.
