Some of our students are currently learning about #entomology in Costa Rica for our Field Entomology Course! This year, the course is lead by our Profs. @JessPopp and Andrew Young (Andrew D Young)!

In Costa Rica teaching the ENVS*4260 Field Entomology course! Found an aphid-infested bush with Alice Dabrowski and took some in-situ photographs of this Dioprosopa clavata feeding. Very pleased with this shot!

Everyone that visits the station gets to make a mural (canvus due to lack of space) of their time. A student had a great idea to make an insect pinning box with each person represented as an insect! I chose a turtle ant (Cephalotes: I feel like Dr. Corrie Moreau would be proud 🥰🐜)

Check out our new paper on hover fly diversity in Georgia apple/peach orchards! We did a spatial and seasonal survey of these important pollinators, predators, and decomposers. 15 species total! #Diptera #Syrphidae UGA Entomology Entomological Society of America academic.oup.com/jee/advance-ar…

Thrilled to share the first journal article to come out of the Young lab, led by Alice Dabrowski!! First records of Tropidia albistylum in Canada written by Alice Dabrowski @EntoSamm and myself 🪰 journal.lib.uoguelph.ca/index.php/eso/…

#UofG | Meet Bubbles, a rare hot pink grasshopper taken in by a 5-year-old and his family, and learn what School of Environmental Sciences entomologist Dr. Andrew Young thinks of the unique insect. Read more: cbc.ca/news/canada/lo…

Our own Dr. Andrew Young (Andrew D Young) explains that pink grasshoppers like "Bubbles" aren't actually that rare. But as they are that easily visible to predators, not many survive and that is why we rarely see them!

Excited to share that our guide to common hover flies of Georgia (USA) is finally live! In it you will find detailed descriptions and ID tools for this highly important group of insects. extension.uga.edu/publications/d… UGA Entomology UGA Extension UGA Botanical Garden Entomological Society of America NIFA

New paper out of the lab led by @EntoSamm in collaboration with Scott Clem, PhD, based on an undergrad project by Blair Fitz A worldwide review of Syrphidae migration: doi.org/10.1111/een.13… The review is open access+summarizes over 150 years of work on syrph migration!

Very excited to see this published!! We did a global literature review of long-distance hover fly migration and found nearly 50 species that exhibit this fascinating behavior. There’s a lot of cool work out there, and also much left unknown! Check it out! #diptera Ecological Entomology

Excited to present an #SESSeminar in collaboration with our EDI committee. Dr. Marsha Hinds Myrie (University of Guelph Office of Teaching on Learning) on "Positionality and Curriculum Violence in Building Inclusive Teaching Practice". Oct 10, 12 noon. Hybrid. ➡️ses.uoguelph.ca/events/2024/10…

Check out my #EntSoc24 talk today (2:54pm, room 129B) on hover fly migration! I’ll be discussing our recent review published in Ecological Entomology. Come see the wonderful illustrations by co-author @EntoSamm!
