Around 1347 B.C., the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten established a new capital city at Amarna—and, apparently, a police force to monitor sacred areas there. Archaeologists have recovered a whistle made from a cow bone, likely used by one such guard. archaeology.org/news/2025/09/1…

The deepest part of the Unnamed Caves of Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky is the "dark zone." There, archaeologists and Cherokee scholars are bringing ancient artwork to light. Fantastical figures, such as panthers with eagle talons, appear in the depths. archaeology.org/issues/novembe…

At this site, a significant event took place. A single moment, which would change the course of human history and lead to the rise of massive empire. I stood here, getting soaking wet in the rain, awestruck by a site most people will never visit. Do you know what happened here?

Up in the Granite Range south of Jackpot by some of the many jumbled rock outcrops. To the south 8 miles or so is the major new Surge lithium mining explo project - ripping drill pads in to juniper & sage habitats. No place is safe from run amok mining activity in NV these days!

Dipshit click-baiters in 2025 think hunter-gatherers were clueless, incapable of social organization or ingenuity because they can’t be bothered to do any actual research which is why they also think archaeologists conducting professional, standard excavations are unskilled

Today is Michaelmas, or the feast day of St Michael. I'm fascinated by the history, lore and legends surrounding this holiday, and I want to share some of what I've learned as there's much confusion among readers outside the UK. Let's learn together. Thread:

There is no evidence that the Exodus ever happened, so there is no need to imagine a specific pharaoh to have presided over it. As a mythological event, it almost certainly describes a generic pharaoh drawn from a number of historical precedents.

This week we're looking at painted material and paintings from the ISAC Museum collection! This brightly painted piece of limestone comes from the tomb of Montuemhat who was Mayor of Thebes at the turn of the 25th and 26th Egyptian Dynasties. His tomb, TT34, was beautifully

Archaeologists are not puzzled. It is clearly made by copper tools with quartz sand abrasion. We have many examples to compare with, which still have sand embedded in drill holes, with some of the sand containing leached chemicals from the copper drill. Don't believe grifters

As one of the most common types of items found in archaeological sites, pottery was clearly an important aspect of daily life. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that some pottery is elaborated painted, such as these example here from Meroitic graves at the sites of Qustul
