The match between Magnapinna and the Pygmy squid was a nailbiter! In the end we lost the pygmy squid, Kodama jujutsu, whose martial arts and homemade glue couldn't beat huge fins and long elbow-arms. Congratulations, Magnapinna!

In the final match we lost the whiplash squid, Idioteuthis. It was tentacle against tentacle, and the whiplash's retractable appendages took second place to Grimalditeuthis' dangling squid puppets! Congrats, Grimalditeuthis. Get those freaky puppets out of my face.

It’s the final round of #Squidtember 2024’s #BestSquid tournament. This has been so much fun to participate in. There’s been some huge surprises along the way, and so many #squidfacts. Vote now while you can. Choose your 🦑 overlord before they choose you. #squid #cephalopod

Bathyteuthis is a genus of squid hailing from a less talked about order of squid, Bathyteuthida. Bathyteuthis berryi is one of the few squid species that broods their eggs. #SQUIDtember

As #squidtember now draws to a close, here are some more origami to illustrate the central role that squids are expected to have in future marine ecosystes. What do you think of my origami squid OceanX ?

To celebrate the close of another memorable #Squidtember, I made a size comp for all the #BestSquid contenders! *Some genera & species contain a fair amount of variation, so while these do represent known adult/subadult sizes, other arrangements could be equally accurate.

The daily cephaloposts are going to be on hiatus until mid-December. Everything is fine, I'm just going to be travelling and I didn't want to prep three weeks worth of posts in advance. If you need some cephalopods in my absence, check out the thread below 📷Mark Atwood

iNaturalist is amazing source of nature photos, including many cephalopod pictures. People are always contributing photos, and it is overall an amazing resource. I also have a large backlog of posts that you might not have seen if you recently followed me.

I’m off for a month to conduct some deep-sea research south of New Zealand. When internet is available, I’ll give an inside look into what fishing surveys look like and some of the interesting species we find. Here’s my home for the month! #DeepSea #science

Parasites do not get enough attention in marine research. They’re absolutely everywhere when we collect specimens. Eyes, tongues, gills, and even burrowed under the skin like this one I found embedded in a rattail’s tail. I have no idea what it is, just that it’s freaking cool.

Many bony fish have a second jaw inside their throat called the pharyngeal jaw. It helps them to break down food and without having to open their mouth and potentially losing their prey. Think, the Xenomorphs from the alien franchise. Here’s an example from a hake seen today.
