As you can see from this 1913 photo, getting on the high steps for streetcars was difficult for women wearing fashionable "hobble skirts." Getting off was even more dangerous, and women were in danger of breaking their legs...

So it seems the more I work on my PhD the less I know what it's about. Should I be worried by this? (I definitely feel very worried.) 🙈
