I had a productive meeting today with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to reiterate the Department of Defense 🇺🇸’s commitment to work closely with our partners to achieve shared defense and security goals.

In meetings with the World Bank and IMF in Washington, DC, we underscored Somalia’s commitment to pursuing economic reforms, completing the debt relief process and the need to align WB’s Country Program Framework with our national priorities.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, I always visit Muslim countries, fasting in solidarity & sharing an Iftar. Today, I am happy to continue this tradition in Somalia. I thank President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for the warm welcome.

Today in Somalia I visited families who have been forced to flee due to terrorism & drought. Despite having lost so much, their determination to rebuild their lives is nothing short of inspiring. The world can no longer neglect them nor the millions of fellow Somalis in need.

Our in-class teaching is being wrapped up today marking halfway through the most hectic & transformative experience I ever encountered. We bid farewell to our togetherness as a cohort, looking forward to reuniting once again in the celebratory spirit of our graduation ceremony.

An investigation by the OAG has discovered that public funds of around $21 million USD went missing in shenanigans during the period from March, 2018 to April 2023. Some officials are under scrutiny for suspicion, as part of a scathing battle to lance the boil of corruption.

Corruption will soon be water under the bridge. The admin of Prez Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is profoundly demonstrating a high level of tenacity & willingness to root out the deep-seated disingenuous political culture which long served as a breeding ground for all sorts of misconducts.
