A must-read from Will Raderman in GOVERNING: “State agencies are trying to address technical shortcomings that led to as much as $135B in fraud during the pandemic. But declining and volatile federal funding for administration is impeding those efforts.” governing.com/management-and…

Variation in the ratio of home price to incomes is closely correlated with variation in homelessness. (Big red dot on the trendline is Los Angeles, big green dot is Houston.) Can't solve the homelessness crisis without solving the housing shortage. aeihousingcenter.org/good_neighbors…

This year's big state housing reform success is the - my colleague Eli has a handy rundown of the five bills that Jared Polis signed. Underrated: HB24-1007, which is straight-up fair housing law by my lights.

New HUD waiver to cut red tape & allow homeless applicants for Section 8 HCVs to self-certify income for up to 90 days 👇

Rough sleepers need help but are often short on paperwork; HUD would give local agencies 90 days to verify income in appropriate cases like these

Portland: Big ridership gains from the 'Forward Together' network realignment process that we did with TriMet. The plan refocused service on goals of ridership and equity, expanding service but deleting services that met neither goal. portlandtribune.com/business/forwa…

The UK's housing shortage is a stunning reminder that housing subsidies without growth control relief can't help 100 families fit in 90 homes

🇬🇧 Housing Benefit is universally entitled, unlike 🇺🇲 Section 8!

They just don't allow new units on which those vouchers would attach

In 2019, EIG first proposed the Heartland Visa, which swiftly made it onto multiple presidential platforms and earned the endorsement of the US Conference of Mayors.

Today, John W Lettieri, Adam Ozimek and I are here to tell you how to make Heartland Visas a reality.

About half of states have protest petition laws that allow people who own property near a proposed rezoning to gather signatures and trigger a requirement for a supermajority vote of local elected officials for the zoning change to go forward: mercatus.org/research/polic…

Fascinating reminder that NYC's population is constrained by zoning, not by crime.

If NYC just ended growth controls near the subway, we'd be reading trend pieces about how people are fleeing high crime in Nashville for America's safest big city

My favorite example of this was touring a NYC gas plant where the whole crew was annoyed about the forced closure of Indian Point

They're among the only people in NYC who stood to materially benefit from shutting nuclear, but it rankled their identities as energy professionals

The Sierra Club stepped up to help end the madness of the state 'baby NEPA' for housing in Minnesota (MERA)

These laws are not environmental laws, they are status quo laws.

Kudos SierraClubMN for rescuing environmentally sound urbanism from cynical greenwashing!

The 2010s big brain case for fearing 'premature deindustrialization' was the argument that it had uniquely durable productivity growth compared to the services sector

But, barring another explanation, it looks like manufacturing is no longer a magic carpet lifting productivity

I get the national security/infant industry motives for tariffs against China; but why are we raising tariffs against Canadian timber? Do we think America's economic specialization lies in forestry?

The City plans to commit $3.8B in capital for affordable housing in FY24, incl $2.8B for NYC Housing projects + $965M for NYCHA repairs.

That's double last year’s $1.8B in capital commitments—itself a record for highest funding level ever.
