Sewell Chan brought me to the Texas Tribune, where I covered political extremism and an array of other subjects that can prompt newsroom disagreements on tone, approach, etc. Sewell and I had many such convos. All of them were kind, and made me a better journalist.

I have not heard details from Columbia Journalism School providing their perspective - but I can say this: every interaction I've had with Sewell Chan was courteous, professional, and committed to the ethics of journalism (even when those ethics require tough conversations.)

am blown away by this. (full disclosure: i'd edit sewell on occasion at nyt, but just by phone.) appreciate his transparency. fwiw, i found cjr vastly more interesting in the last 8 months than in the previous 8 years.

I knew Sewell Chan at the Texas Tribune as a deeply passionate journalist who was both a relentless cheerleader and a thoughtful editor of our work. His ambition & support played a large role in the Tribune’s first-ever Pulitzer nomination last year.

I can’t speak to the Columbia Journalism Review accusations. But @SewellChan just spent over an hour speaking to our Baruch College journalism students (mostly Black, brown and low-income.) He was patient, kind, generous, inspiring. Also, best editors I ever had were tough & demanding. Just sayin’ …

During my fellowship at the Trib, Sewell Chan was nothing but kind and encouraging.

Sewell Chan is a brilliant editor—a legend among writers. Shocking that @columbia and jelani cobb fired him. A crime against journalism.

There is a biz opportunity here. A nimble competitor to @Amazon should start posting the tariff tax on consumer goods. In addition to providing some useful transparency for American consumers, it might give boot-lickin’ Bezos a little heartburn…
