I know this is late to the party, but it seems like hollow wokewashing was an entry requirement for this year's Cannes ads.

Spending time on Twitter again because every designer on Instagram is either giving me advice or trying to sell me a course

Hollow wokeness in ads chafes me. Not only because social movements are being coopted for profit, but also because it's just lazy and I'm tired of seeing lame ads. Try harder.

A big thank you to the brands commodifying social movements so that I can be a social justice warrior just by shopping. Now that's convenience.

I was deep in an internet rabbit hole the other night and I came across the OG of woke ads, the Buy the World a Coke spot from the 70's, and it's a bit depressing that after decades of wokewashing my eyeballs are still subjected to so many tone-deaf ads

Woke ads aren't inherently brave if wokeness is the WHOLE idea. Mostly because wokeness on its own isn't a substitute for a concept, but also because wokeness is expected nowadays.

Kaepernick taking a knee was brave because everyone else was standing. Making a campaign about it wasn't because it's what people expect. Try harder

Woke ads aren't inherently bad. What makes them annoying is when wokeness is the whole idea. Social awareness should just be part of the scenery.

Love Heineken's Shutters campaign from last year. Instead of using billboards, they paid 5,000 bars to display ads on their facades while they were closed during lockdowns. All the bars have reopened since the campaign launched.
