We often discuss riyā’ (showing-off), but are mostly oblivious to another evil that consumes us: al-‘ujb (self-admiration, vanity, and pride). Many are gripped by this disease, thinking they are superior to others, either because of their knowledge or their lineage.

The hypocrites of our time

Ibn al‑Jawzī رحمه الله said: “How sorrowful — for a servant who, the more his sins increase, the less he seeks forgiveness; and the closer he comes to the graves, the stronger his heedless [sluggishness] becomes.” — al‑Tabṣirah (1/55)

Strive against yourself, against your desires, against your lustful gaze, against wanting to be famous, against riya, against disobedience, against gossiping, and strive for a paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth - Shaykh Muhammed Ibn Ramzān Al-Hājiri حفظه الله تعالى

The intelligent person will not risk incurring the wrath of one individual by seeking the love and approval of a thousand others, for doing so would result in loss, not gain.

Marwān ibn Muḥammad al-Asadī said: [from the imams of the Salaf] “Three are not to be trusted: the Ṣūfī, the storytellers (al-quṣṣāṣ), and the refutation of the people of innovation against the people of innovation.”

It was said to Al-Imām Ahmad bin Hanbal (رحمه الله): “A man enters the masjid, and sees people around so he beautifies his Salah, is this Riya'? He said: No, that is the blessing of a Muslim upon another Muslim” ▫️[Al-Furu' by Ibn Muflih]

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: "The key to honor is obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ)." [Hadi al-Arwah (1/139)]

Al-ʿAllāmah Zayd al-Madkhalī رحمه الله said: “It is not from the Manhaj of the Salaf to water down the daʿwah to Allah by showering the opponents — from the people of innovation — with flowery praise in front of Ahl al-Sunnah, in gatherings and assemblies, nor by commending

True courage is in facing your inner battles. It’s easy to fight external enemies, but the real struggle is against your own desires, your ego, and your weaknesses. The believer who conquers their inner self is the one who achieves victory in the sight of Allāh.
