I've heard experts say that #LLMs learn a lot about the world in the process of statistically predicting what the next word is. I think that's wrong. If they "learn" anything at all, they learn about how humans use language—not about the world. The distinction matters. #AIEthics

I now understand Susanne Bodker's rage & why she was compelled to write, "When second wave HCI meets third wave challenges". I'm tired of AI/LLM. Its the same underlying problems in new formats without connecting to the established, but apparently quickly forgotten, literature.

Great paper. The fact it had to be written at all is a signal that involvement of actual humans in design research was always something that some factions of HCI only tolerated. It’s in our best interest to, on principle, reject all papers that use LLMs as stand-ins for users.

The racism behind chatGPT that we aren't talking about... This year, I learned that students use chatGPT because they believe it helps them sound more respectable. And I learned that it absolutely does not work. A thread. 🧵

📣Call 2 action 2 *NOT* believe the hype and engage critically with #GenAI in design education. How may we use #GenAI critically to pluralize knowledge and practices and include and learn from human/non-human communities? We hope to navigate this with students and institutions.

Positionality is a reflexive practice central to critical/interpretive methodologies. As knowledges are always embodied, claims to knowing the social&political world are necessarily generated from somewhere. Hence: the transparent need to locate how the researcher is positioned.

In decolonial thought, we know that, in the politics of knowledge, “[n]obody escapes the class, sexual, gender, spiritual, linguistic, geographical, and racial hierarchies of the modern/colonial capitalist/patriarchal world-system” (Grosfoguel 2007, 213).

1. I'm legit shocked by the design of Meta's new notification informing us they want to use the content we post to train their AI models. It's intentionally designed to be highly awkward in order to minimise the number of users who will object to it. Let me break it down.

Post-Doc Vacancy #HRI and #DesignJustice. We will explore with workers and unions *alternative scenarios* in which robots are NOT means of production imposed on workers but *belong to and act in solidarity with workers*. bit.ly/4aF2gUO
