Yosemite Fire crews plan to ignite piles in Wawona along Forest Drive today. Over 300 piles have been successfully burned in Wawona and Yosemite Valley this year. Completion of these piles plays a pivotal role in community protection and healthy forest management.

Why did the groundhog become a firefighter?
To avoid looking for his shadow and having six more weeks of ideal burning conditions. 😄

Smoke may be noticeable from the El Portal and Wawona woodlots. No active burning taking place until mid-next week. NPS Photo/R.Mitchell

Yosemite Fire completed 80 burn piles yesterday in Wawona. This caused smoky conditions this morning, but blue skies returned to the community this afternoon. Pile burning efforts will pause this evening due to weather forecasted to move into the area. NPS Photo K.DeRosier
