Languages are not just another subject in school. Languages are about relationships, understanding and communication. They're about discovering a world beyond your own. They're full-on experiences you wouldn't enjoy otherwise. Languages take every one of us to another level.

People sometimes ask why I bother with other languages when “everyone speaks English.” But the truth is, millions don’t. And even when they do, their hearts beat in their own words. Learn a language, and you’ll find doors opening to deeper interactions and real human connection.

Trip weather is looking a bit damp on Wednesday so make sure you have a waterproof coat. The ground will be wet and muddy when we are out in the Somme on Thursday so make sure you have appropriate footwear.

We paid our respects this afternoon at the Arras Memorial which commemorates 35000 soldiers killed between 1916-18 in the Arras sector and who have no known grave.

We started our visit to the Somme by laying a wreath to George Bowler at the Mametz Wood memorial. George lived in Splott and attended Moorland Road School. He was killed in Mametz Wood and is commemorated at Thiepval as he has no known grave.

Beaumont Hamel is a moving memorial to the soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment. On the 1st July 1916 in less than half an hour they were almost completely wiped out.

We expect to arrive at school at 10pm. Please park inside the school car park as we will need the space on Willows Avenue for the bus to park. We will inform you if there is any delay.  See you soon.
