A highlight from #EMNLP2021 fascinating keynote by Steven Bird 🍉: NLP often comes with a set of assumptions about what are the needs of communities with low-resource languages. But we need to learn what they *actually* need, they may have a completely different epistemology. /1

This is absolutely appalling. Between this and the recent NDA scandal, I think there’s enough cause for Altman to step down from his leadership role at OpenAI. The world needs a stronger moral compass at the helm of such an influential AI organization.
