🚨The cruel Bill returns to the House of Commons today.

People seeking safety in the UK should be treated with compassion.

No-one should be forcibly deported to Rwanda, or anywhere else.

This Bill will only cause further harm to already vulnerable individuals.

Today marks 30 years since the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi began.

Our Director, @akabagabo, survived with her 6 month old baby, and was supported to rebuild her life.

30 years on, things are much more difficult for women seeking safety.

Victoria Canning 'IT HAD TO BE THIS WAY'
The final stage of the spiral of denial is to admit that the abuse occurred but to justify it. To suggest that it was the fault of the victims, or that there was no other way.

Victoria Canning 'IT'S NOT HOW IT LOOKS'
Once such evidence is provided, the next stage is often to question a particular version of events, instead claiming that others carried out the atrocity or the evidence pointed to something rather different occurring.

Victoria Canning Everything we are seeing play out - Cohen spiral of denial that states use when accused of abuses 🚩

'IT DIDN'T HAPPEN'
The first reaction is often to deny that anything occurred at all. This lasts until international bodies produce evidence that it did occur

This is straight from Stanley Cohen's thesis on interpretive denial as an attempt to neutralise.

Something happened - 'an incident' - but it's not what you think it was.

Waiting for international law to determine the confines of genocide is what got us to Rwanda and Former Yugoslavia.

Retrospective genocide acknowledgement does absolutely nothing to prevent genocide.

Why do we continue to trust law and fail?
