Israel is heavily bombing Rafah, Gaza’s last place of refuge, in the middle of the night, killing scores of civilians, most of them children.

There are many others injured and buried under the rubble.

Don’t stop talking about Rafah.

Reading a lot of new and wonderful short story collections at the moment, and this is an absolute stand-out. Reporting from the borderlands of continued human existence on earth. Bleakness opens out into something tender, and funny and beautiful. To be read urgently.

The author vote went against the Society of Authors condemning a genocide. Reminder that writers, poets, journalists have been killed. Libraries destroyed, books burned, schools and universities bombed.

But, nope, the authors voted against any solidarity or condemnation. 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Disappointed that the Society of Authors members voted down a statement on Gaza, and that the management committee don't see solidarity – the basic organising principle of unionism – as a function of the institution.

In 2021, a friend wrote saying he was having a medical catastrophe and didn’t know if he'd make it.

He said he'd been taking finasteride, a baldness drug that thousands of men say has caused them devastating side effects.

This is my friend’s story:

'My brief for being in Italy was a strange one. I was there to follow in the footsteps of someone whose identity I didn’t know and didn’t want to know either.'

I travelled to the island of Ischia in the footsteps of Elena Ferrante for @FTWeekend.
