During the summer we were able to undertake a habitat assessment at a farm in the Vale of Glamorgan. Over the next few months and years we will be working alongside the farmer to restore a number of different habitats for species such as Yellowhammer, Brown Hare & Grey Partridge.

It was a great pleasure to present Ysgol y Bedol with their beautifully designed Hedgehog box yesterday at their school assembly. Diolch yn fawr iawn am eich help! Now let’s wait and see who will come along… 🦔

The small bright dots in this video (with the exception to the sheep at the top) are Woodcock, foraging in a sheep grazed field in the Amman Valley last week. We counted 40 Woodcock in 30 minutes from just four fields. I wonder how many there are in the valley over winter.

Another lovely day in the Amman Valley with local volunteers. This time giving our local Marsh Fritillary population a helping hand by clearing away some willow scrub. Hopefully we will see the butterfly here again in the summer. Big thank you to the landowners and volunteers.

Nervous drive back to Wales yesterday from Derek Gow with a van full of water voles. Happy to be part of a group of conservation organisations and landowners looking to bring back the water vole to parts of South Wales.

The pay is just not good enough says Lizzie at INCC, she’s done some research so she knows. She also looked at contract conditions finding almost half the roles were fixed term, meaning a huge proportion of the workforce face regular uncertainty. See: c-js.uk/3SLdSOU

Thank you to local ecologist Aaron Davies for helping to install 50 Dormouse survey tubes for us at a farm in the Vale of Glamorgan. The farm has over 5km (and increasing) of thick hedgerow which is linked to surrounding woodland and scrub - so fingers crossed.

Great day today with West Wales Rivers Trust pulling balsam at our nature reserve in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Still lots of work to do there, but its good to make a start and have a plan for the future. Also lovely to see cuckoo, pied flycatcher, slow worm and the micro moth Mompha locupletella.
