It's Labor Day. It's a day that was born out of resistance over exploitative working conditions. It was a working class uprising that led to a shift in working hours, conditions, and ultimately spurred the labor movement. Here's our annual thread on the history of how it began.

Workers, including cigarmakers, dressmakers, printers, shoemakers, and bricklayers risked their jobs to attend the first Labor Day march. At least ten thousand marchers showed up to fight for an 8-hour workday and an end to child labor and oppressive working conditions.

On this day in labor history, we're celebrating the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, passed by Pres. Roosevelt. The Fair Labor Standards Act was a sweeping labor law that established standards around a $.25 min wage, child labor, overtime, & a 40-hr work week. 🧵
