Today we remember those who died & lost their homes in the catastrophic earthquake in Tashkent on 26 April 1966. Many of the city’s older buildings were made of mud brick & crumbled. People came from across the USSR to help rebuild Tashkent as a modern, planned city.

A sleeper train took us from Bukhara to Nukus in western Uzbekistan. Freshly rested, we were able to visit Savitsky Museum of Arts and marvel at the works of art from avant-garde & culture of the people of Karakalpakstan. We finished the day with a stroll along the riverside.
