In its early years, UTEP faced challenging circumstances, including when the Spanish flu epidemic hit the area. The people of this community showed resilience and overcame adversity. Watch as campus leaders recount these stories and share a message of optimism for the future.

Miners, if you need financial assistance to continue your UTEP journey, we can help. Emergency grants are still available to help you pay rent, utilities, medical bills, food and other necessities. Your focus should be on school, not your bills. Apply at utep.edu/utepcares.

1/7 I was asked to write about the End of the English major piece. I won't. This isn't the moment for philosophers to gloat or to pretend that it's our disciplinary virtues that are keeping us from similar fate. archive.is/TvefW

2/7 The study of literature and the love of literature are alive, and probably more vital to our civilization than ever. I'm currently in a reading group on Moby Dick led by Brian Yothers and it is one of the most rewarding intellectual adventures I've had in a while.

3/7 It's a book I've revisited many times - especially at times when the hypos threaten to get the better of me. But this is my first time being guided through it by a scholar of literature. It's a *fundamentally* different experience from reading as an amateur

4/7 A scholar like Brian can illuminate Melville's work, make connections, explain jokes, show you what to care about and can explain to you why you care about what you do care about. utep.edu/liberalarts/en…

5/7 Brian has written many important books and articles on Melville and knows the secondary lit and cultural impact of Moby Dick in a way that lets him take our amateur "insights" as the basis for deep connections with worlds of scholarship

John Symons (@johnfsymons) 's Twitter Profile Photo

6/7 It is a privilege to read literature with a scholar - a genuine scholar - And it would be deeply sad if our children and grandchildren do not have access to that opportunity.

7/7 If you bemoan robotic ideological capture and consumerist ideology don't cheer the collapse of the English Depts. They make deep scholarly engagement with great literature possible, no institution will step in as a replacement, there will be no home for it
