Crew and platforms getting some much needed R & R after a busy few weeks with the QLCS Tornadoes. Bring on the sunshine and 75° for the next few days ☀️ 🕶️ Definitely a good week for a car wash to get that Mississippi and Arkansas mud off! 🧼

The usman haque U.S. National Science Foundation MAPNet MOBILE INTEGRATED PROFILING SYSTEM (MIPS) ceilometer captured a high backscatter intensity yesterday morning, June 7th, indicating how dense the wildfire smoke was over North Alabama. Our rooftop camera also shows the dense layer of smoke.

Just because we are in North Alabama doesn’t mean we can’t study hurricanes! Our students and scientists participate in many aspects of severe weather research, including hurricanes. A great piece highlighting tropical cyclone research taking place University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

Hurricane field deployments offer many challenges, but launching weather balloons in hurricane force winds is probably one of the more difficult, but rewarding tasks. These soundings and profiling data provides critical insight into hurricane and storm structure/evolution.

Notice the haze yesterday? You're not the only one! Looks like the smoke from the Canadian wildfires made their presence known over Huntsville yesterday. Our MIPS lidar ceilometer shows this smoke as it was transported into our area overnight Sunday into Monday.

Who said we only study severe wx?? A few of our crew took off with our MoDLS (Mobile Doppler Lidar & Soundings) to Ft Stewart in GA this morning to document the boundary layer in and around wildland 🔥 while they host prescribed burns around the fort. More to come!

A successful day of lidar coordination & data collection at Ft Stewart, GA ahead of prescribed burns tomorrow. Stay tuned for fire & smoke data as we collaborate with the US Forest Service, San Jose State, & other agencies/universities. Fire Weather is severe weather!!!

On-site for the Ft Stewart prescribed burn to do micrometeorology fire science! Ignition from helicopters, then we scan the boundary layer wind flows and the smoke plume. Fire weather is severe weather!

This hot, dry October weather is spooky 👻 to some, but MAX is “fall”ing for it! We are out in Hartselle, AL for a local fall festival! We always love when we can work with our local communities!
