Sir Anthony Mason, former High Court Chief Justice, had a great technique. Sometimes, he would remain deliberately silent in a dialogue so that his interlocutor would feel the need to say *something*, often revealing something foolish. At least, that’s what happened to me.

I’m moved by those who stood between the knife-wielder and the further innocent lives the attacker had in his sights—such as the man armed with a bollard impeding the attacker; and another person, unarmed, who placed their body between the attacker and further potential victims.
