I (w/Tristan Hall) built a <$900 treadmill that lets you walk in any direction in VR. The closest alternatives with similar functionality cost $40,000. Ours works and it's kind of awesome?? About 1.5 weeks ago, we demoed it Socratica's Symposium! Here's the full story
