It is time for decisive action to prevent our rivers being used as open sewers. Let’s return them to people and nature. On 26th October, we’re supporting the #MarchForCleanWater in London to demand urgent action from our new Government. #FloodTheStreets marchforcleanwater.org

I’m speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live later today about my recent Ghost Orchid find - the second UK sighting in 37 years. It’s wonderful to see genuine enthusiasm about the find and plants in general - if you want to know more about plants please check out BSBI: Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland and consider membership

7 days straight of raw sewage discharge into Windermere, but United Utilities refuse to be interviewed on BBC Radio 4 Today. Contempt for accountability & us. Two actions you can take: 1. Follow MattStaniek, indefatigable Windermere campaigner. 2. Join marchforcleanwater.org on 26/10

The scale of the #Biodiversity #Extinction crisis is truly staggering. And it's getting worse. The futile, & ultimately doomed, endless pursuit of profit & economic growth (an ultimately meaningless construct) on a finite planet are at the root of this. #BiodiversityCrisis

One of my favourite #ClimbingPlants - Black Bryony, Tamus communis. Associated in #folklore with protection from evil spirits. Poisonous, the berries are the most toxic part & are called "Devil's Cherries." How many more cool points do you want? Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape #wildflowerhour

A serendipitous 📷 of the #Hoverfly Eristalis pertinax honing in on a #Ragwort, Jacobaea vulgaris, flower in South Cumbria. Ragwort becomes increasingly important as a nectar source for invertebrates throughout late summer & autumn. #wildflowerhour

Water Figwort in the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape Usually strongly associated with water but also grows on disturbed ground. A bit of both here as this is just below to tufa patch where Maidenhair Fern grows on a rocky outcrop. Rock #ClimbingPlants for #wildflowerhour

Never underestimate the power of Ivy for invertebrates 💚 Another species that is brilliant for biodiversity and a crucial late-season nectar source in particular. Far too often unappreciated or even demonised in this country. #ClimbingPlants #wildflowerhour

Saltmarsh Rush, Juncus gerardii on the Solway Coast National Landscape A significant component of mid-upper marsh, often in mosaic with Festuca rubra, but also forming near monocultures. The later defined by Rodwell as the SM16b community, here forming small, discrete stands. #WildflowerHour

Marsh Woundwort, Stachys palustris on the Arnside Shore. The bruised leaves have an unpleasant aroma, but much less so than Hedge Woundwort, & have been used to staunch bleeding & heal wounds (antiseptic properties). Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape #wildflowerhour

Is there anyone credible out there can explain in simple terms why this isn’t a truly terrifying image? Like, why isn’t this headline news almost every day?

BREAKING: 5 seabird species added to UK Red List. 🚨 Climate change, invasive predators, bird flu, and overfishing are pushing populations to the brink. Urgent action is needed - including upholding the sandeel fishing closure in English North Sea & Scottish waters.

Instead of "canaries in the coalmine" we should speak of "seabirds on the skerries": today sees 5 seabirds added to the UK Red List of "Most Concern", inc. Arctic Tern, Great Skua, Great Black-Backed Gull. Miraculous creatures all, sounding their warnings. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Sometimes I think our system of government is archaic. Then I see something like this and realise it’s completely bonkers. The tiny balls, the gloves, I don’t know where to start!
