Gov will introduce new offence of common assault against a shop worker bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi… but the maximum sentence will be the same as common assault is now. Great that The British Retail Consortium, UsdawUnion & Yvette Cooper have recognised increased max sentence would be counterproductive

- New 'public interest' check from prosecutors
- Better training
- More openness, written sentencing reasons in some cases

Rich spent 8 weeks in prison for drug possession while at uni. Now he wants to give back & become a teacher.

In these US states, Rich's conviction can be expunged.
But here he must disclose his conviction forever & may struggle to find work.

Magistrates courts are open to the public for a reason - justice must be fair & transparent. And no-one should be asked to justify why they want to observe.

Incidents like this directly undermine these fundamental principles.
