Gov will introduce new offence of common assault against a shop worker bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi… but the maximum sentence will be the same as common assault is now. Great that The British Retail Consortium, UsdawUnion & Yvette Cooper have recognised increased max sentence would be counterproductive

Excellent reports by Tristan Kirk
Top work also by Penelope Gibbs
it’s been good to work alongside them -with credit to BBC Radio 4 Today for interviewing Tristan Kirk & myself on SJP.
& to Joshua Rozenberg for interviewing me on SJP (not “trendy” area of law but key)
Making change!
Great proposals The Magistrates' Association for reform of the Single (Un) justice procedure tho could go further. If courts open to media they sd also open to public & we need moratorium on dealing with no plea cases until we know why less than a third of defendants plead telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/2…
Magistrates are demanding major reforms to the Single Justice Procedure, to protect sick, vulnerable & elderly people
- New 'public interest' check from prosecutors
- Better training
- More openness, written sentencing reasons in some cases

⚠🚨 Shocking incident: observer physically removed from Stratford Magistrates court.
We’ve stopped collecting data, but some courtwatchers have continued observing.
On Monday, one courtwatcher was questioned & forced out of the building.
