Almost 1 month in to my post on St Helena, and I'm starting to get a real sense of appreciation for the unique landscapes and biodiversity of this island. Some amazing conservation work being done, with limited resources, but equally a huge amount of potential for new projects.

St Helena is a mega hiking destination, many of valley walks go from sea level to 500m+. If nothing else I'm gonna be a lot fitter by the end of this job!

This represents an industrial scale, opportunistic plundering of a glorious and precious species that is on the brink of a comeback from near oblivion. Oceanic animals know no barriers, something we as global citizens must surely try to understand if there’s to be any hope Marine Conservation Society

The year is almost over, and NYE fireworks are just around the corner. So it's time to talk birds and fireworks! Thread 🧵👇 We have now published new work in ESA Frontiers looking at the effects of fireworks on birds, using weather radar and bird counts: doi.org/10.1002/fee.26…

After a month or so back in the UK, St Helena seems almost like a distant memory. It's good to back in blighty but I do miss weekends hiking across the otherworldly volcanic landscape in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

2 months ago I was living on the second most remote inhabited island in the world working on critically endangered species. This week I'm connecting through london on a 4 hour train journey to supervise people trimming a hedge in Kent. Ecology is a strange career.

Great day out with Vincent Wildlife checking in on their 30+ year monitoring project of bechstein's bats. These bats are the subjects of multiple PhDs and scientific publications, and still bearing fruit with researchers from Bat Conservation Trust and an MSc project along with us today.

We are lucky to have two national nature reserves on our doorstep. Today's adventure was a circular hike round Craig Y Cilau, a botanical gem with abundant bird life - ravens and peregrines stealing the show today. Also great for fungi later in the year.

Finally some decent weather and this meadow near my site work today is genuinely noisy with grasshoppers, and there is abundant butterfly life. Fingers crossed we get a few weeks of this...
