#Tarradale24 Day 4. We abandoned the 'distillery' trench and concentrated efforts today on the walls of a farm building which are 18th C or perhaps even older. We intend to leave the trench open and come back to this one in the summer.
#Tarradale2024 Day 3. Good news: in our second trench we appear to have the wall of a building, probably a farm building shown on the 1788 map. Bad news: in our main trench we have failed to locate the distillery despite some Herculean shifting of material; just a few 19thC finds
Day 2 at #Tarradale24 looking for a distillery shown on a 1788 estate map. In our main trench it's looking increasingly like we have an extensive dump of stone, which may be demolition. Late in the day we began a sondage through this to see if we can reveal any structure beneath.
Work begins on our possible 18th c distillery site in fine spring weather. We have a definite stony feature but no obvious structure can be seen currently. We hope there may be more intact archaeology deeper down. #tarradale24
The mechanical digger has been in today and we have something to start excavating tomorrow! Fingers crossed it's the remains of the 18th c distillery we are looking for. We will should know in the next few days #tarradale24
Here is the double pierced cowrie shell found during finds sorting at Tarradale this week. We think it may have been used as a bead some 6 or 7000 years ago! #mesolithic
In 2001, archaeologists investigating a site in East Lothian that was due to be quarried found the remains of a Mesolithic house built around 11,000 years ago ⚒️
On 15 February join Peeblesshire Archaeological Society to dig into the findings of this fascinating excavation: digitscotland.com/events/a-home-…
