We return to excavations of our possible farm building on the weekend of 8th and 9th June. We hope we have a wall of the building shown on the 1788 Estate map. See tarradalethroughtime.co.uk

Day 4. We abandoned the 'distillery' trench and concentrated efforts today on the walls of a farm building which are 18th C or perhaps even older. We intend to leave the trench open and come back to this one in the summer.

Day 3. Good news: in our second trench we appear to have the wall of a building, probably a farm building shown on the 1788 map. Bad news: in our main trench we have failed to locate the distillery despite some Herculean shifting of material; just a few 19thC finds

Day 2 at looking for a distillery shown on a 1788 estate map. In our main trench it's looking increasingly like we have an extensive dump of stone, which may be demolition. Late in the day we began a sondage through this to see if we can reveal any structure beneath.

Work begins on our possible 18th c distillery site in fine spring weather. We have a definite stony feature but no obvious structure can be seen currently. We hope there may be more intact archaeology deeper down.

The mechanical digger has been in today and we have something to start excavating tomorrow! Fingers crossed it's the remains of the 18th c distillery we are looking for. We will should know in the next few days

Following a recent field visit, we've been researching evidence for tidal mills at Munlochy. The journal of Bishop Forbes (1762) states 'we had a fine prospect of Munlochy-Bay, upon which we saw two CornMilns, which move by Salt-Water' and a 1748 map offers further clues.

New radiocarbon dating has come in for the Rosemarkie caves excavated in 2016-18 pushing earliest activity back to the late Iron Age, or very early Pictish period. This was followed by a major burning event and a period of abandonment. Full details at spanglefish.com/RosemarkieCave…

The last session of Mesolithic finds sorting at Tarradale for the time being from last autumn's shell midden dig. We reckon we have sorted over 200 bags over the last few months, but still have around 100 to do at a later date

Tarradale Distillery Excavation. We intend to open a few trenches over the possible site of a distillery shown on the 1788 map. Friday 3rd May to Monday 6th May 2024, perhaps extending further into the week if necessary. See tarradalethroughtime.co.uk.

Here is the double pierced cowrie shell found during finds sorting at Tarradale this week. We think it may have been used as a bead some 6 or 7000 years ago!
