With just ten days before Christmas and all thoughts turning to the anniversary of the Bulge, I recommend this book as a topical read. The biggest 'maximum effort' of the war. Tap into our podcast on the Mighty Eighth's intervention in the Ardennes on Christmas eve 1944.

It has been evocative researching, interviewing, and writing about Op Granby 35 years on from my own deployment with 4 Regt AAC. December 1990, I was lucky enough to get Christmas at home in Germany. Thousands of troops were already in Saudi Arabia waiting for the war to start..

Current Read - Getting stuck into this enlightening and expert history of the USAAFs' Bombing Offensive over Germany from the Luftwaffe perspective. It really is an absorbing account deftly merging strategic overview and operational reality with a wealth of personal accounts.

The courage of the RAF and USAAF transport crews supporting Allied Airborne operations is often overlooked... Op Varsity was a case. In point, German Flak was intense around the LZs and DZs.

It's almost time to withdraw into the Peters family Festive Bunker for a few days. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, a peaceful and restful holiday, and a wonderful New Year.

I really enjoyed telling the Op Fustian story at the Army Flying Museum last night. The battle at Primosole Bridge is often no more than a footnote to broader accounts of the Sicily campaign. Thank you to ArmyFlyingMuseum for hosting my presentation - now available online.

One of the most important loads carried into battle by the Hamilcar gliders of C Sqn GPR. It was a nasty surprise for German tank crews around Oosterbeek.

Great footage, amazing what we do in wartime that just wouldn't pass muster in peacetime. The key to building formations quickly is the launch interval and time spent formating. It all takes a little longer with tug/glider formations.

There are just a few tickets left on eventbrite for my talk at Essex Records Office in Chelmsford on Tuesday, 3 February. I will be talking about the 381st BG USAAF and their time at RAF Ridgewell during WWII. Hope to see you there...

I took a few moments out of my day today to visit the Mission Mistress Memorial at Moreton Hall Community Centre, Bury St Edmunds. Close to the B17s crash site at Home Covert, the memorial commemorates tragic loss of the Mistress and her crew in January 1945.

Using the terrain and phases of Operation Epsom today our #Battlefieldstudy dropped in to the Odon Valley near Caen to discuss Obstacles, crossing sites, areas etc and considered the modern take on the 1944 action in both defence and offence. Static defence invariably loses.

This was great fun to do. Time well spent with like-minded people! It's interesting to contrast the two halves of the CBO during WWII. Thanks for having me on guys.

I saw this recently - This is a terrible situation. Bawdsey Radar Station is an absolute jewel of a heritage site. It will be an absolute tragedy if we lose it to the sea. bbc.co.uk/news/videos/cd…
