Important reading here. The Tertiary Education Commission and the Minister of Education got what they wanted. But how does the saying go? Be careful what you wish for because it might come true. The consequences are for public education

Solidarity with all staff, and care and collegiality, two things missing in the way these rushed, ill-considered and unnecessary cuts have been pushed. Whatever's announced there are searching questions to ask on how we got here, and what leadership would mean. Me tū kotahi tātou

We will be forever grateful to VUWSA Students Against Cuts for unwavering student solidarity fighting these cuts. We've seen the real community of learners the university should be. Students have articulated why education matters. And they stood up: he iti te kupu, he nui te kōrero.

Student, staff campaigns pushed university management back from the brink of some of the most foolish, recklessly destructive (and arguably unlawful) proposals with Languages, Theatre. But how was it so close? Is there leadership for humanities at VUW? thepost.co.nz/a/nz-news/3500…

Italian, taught at VUW for one hundred years, gone. Latin and Greek, gone. Physical Geography, gone. Geophysics and Graphic Information Systems, gone. Other subjects diminished. These are losses for us all.

"There's a real vacuum of leadership in the humanities here...if you're being managed by people who give every indication that they're not invested in your success, how will this situation be different in a couple of years' time?" rnz.co.nz/news/national/…

Thank you to RNZ The Panel for having our branch pres on today to discuss the cuts at VUW: government underfunding forced the issue, and the gap where leadership should be in the Humanities at Victoria made it that bit worse. rnz.co.nz/national/progr…

Good on VUWSA for taking the lead on this. Why are the Tertiary Education Commission doing a wrecking job on tertiary education? What does the Minister mean by "hard decisions"? thepost.co.nz/a/nz-news/3500…

We are holding our AGM today to reflect on this year, look at the issues ahead and elect new leaders for roles in our branch. Looking forward to seeing members there in union to talk, reflect and practice whakawhanaungatanga amidst everything going on. Details in your email!

We want publicly to mihi and acknowledge all our Campus Care members and staff and students at the Law School, thinking of them with the protests planned today. Swift, brave action from security staff at the end of last year's occupation protected the Law School. Thank you.

LGBTIQ staff and students at Pipitea faced the vitriol and hatred coming from the occupation, as did other minoritized community members. And everyone had their workplace and place of study taken from them. We stand for public health, community, learning.

Thanks again to VUWSA for supporting the counter-protests that, under the cloak of peace laid down by mana whenua, are saying no to the hatred and anti-Māori rhetoric being pushed on the streets today and Thursday. This is the message we send too.
