Even as late as 461, the Western Emperor, Majorian, was able to reconquer much of southern Gaul and Spain, and even attempted to retake Africa from the Vandals. 15 years before the ‘official’ end date of the Western Empire, you could say it was still not ‘over.’

The argument that "Dublin change is irrelevant because UK didn't deport many people via the scheme" is wrong. It's now a massive pull factor because asylum seekers are rational

This is what reactionary populist authoritarianism looks like. It ends in tears. It claims to be majoritarian democracy, but cannibalises itself. Genuine conservatives should reject it. We need a proper free, mixed and balanced constitution, not elective dictatorship.

the john major government really gets a pass on how much terrible shit they did. foreign policy: arms embargoed the bosnians as they were being genocided. domestic policy: the absolute shitshow that was british rail privitisation and introducing interest-only buy to let mortgages

i hold a record on the kobayashi maru. i’m the fastest person to ever say it was a no-win situation. they said, “george, we haven’t even finished explaining it yet.” i said, “doesn’t matter. can’t be done.” they accused me of cheating. there were hearings, inquiries.

My reason for wanting tax rises is that I think the UK has big barriers to private sector growth caused by poor infrastructure and other public goods. Government is best placed to improve these things and with interest rates as high they are, taxes are the best way to fund them.

The correct policy to create new council housing is for councils to actually build new council housing, thereby adding to the overall housing stock. Any policy that does not increase housing supply is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Crucial that the UK returns to a full system cost analysis of different electricity generation technologies The 2020 electricity generation cost report had a go at this - the framework was based on a report that BEIS published in 2017

I asked them if is it a race to the bottom or a race to the top they laughed and said "It's a good geopolitical competition, sir" looks inside it's a race to the bottom
